I enjoy creating multiple series of works in different mediums and sizes as I find I am able to express myself and vision best this way. I create paintings, drawings, collages, videos and installations that examine contemporary and historical issues. In many of my works, I incorporate print media from popular beauty and lifestyle magazines, pop culture images or references and photographs that I have taken.
All of my work is purposely layered with dual themes; Eurocentrism and Afrocentrism, appropriation and appreciation, beauty and ugliness, lightness and darkness, past and present. I am a part of that duality as well, functioning as an observer and simultaneously a participant, affected by the very themes being explored. Creating art is my way of sharing my observations and questioning them.
Ultimately, through my work I am inviting the viewer to join me in rethinking and deconstructing definitions about women, identity, beauty, race, and the influence of the media and culture in society from a historical and contemporary viewpoint.
